Unlike blue lotus (Nymphaea caerulea) which is technically a lily, sacred white lotus is a true lotus, which grows wild in many parts of the world.
These lotus species have a long history of use in ancient Egypt, India, and Greece. They have been used medicinally, as well used in religious rituals and as a mild inebriant when soaked in wine. The effects are often described as calming and meditative.
White lotus and other lotus species contains a variety of compounds including aporphine, nuciferine, nornuciferine, phytosterols, flavonoids, and polyphenols.
