Butterfly pea, or Clitoria ternatea, is an herb used traditionally in ayurvedic medicine. It belongs to a class of ayurvedic herbs called the Medhya Rasayana, herbs that enhance the intellect/spirit.
Butterfly pea contains tannins, phlobatannin, saponins, triterpenoids, phenols, flavanoids, flavonol glycosides, alkaloids, antharaquinone, and anthocyanins.
Butterfly pea contains many pigment compounds similar to those found in blueberries (anthocyanins), and when steeped in tea it turns the water a deep blue color. Adding an acid such as lemon juice changes the tea's color to purple. Because of this property the flowers are often used in cocktails or as a natural coloring agent in cooking.
When used in tea a good starting dose seems to be about 10-15 flowers, though higher doses are not uncommon. Higher doses are generally more relaxing, while lower doses tend to be more stimulating.
